The Process
A gust of expression
Start in the bowels of the heart. Where the grimiest, most stagnant, unexpressed feelings that you have about your parents, live.
Take a breath into that space and when you exhale, make a mark on the canvas. Let the brush stroke be an extension of your whole body’s expression.
Unspoken true feelings
Begin writing things on the canvas that you’d probably never say to your parents’ faces, but are true.
These feelings desire a voice and a witness.
“You’re dangerous to my heart and you’ll never understand”
Illustrating essence
Use shape and color to depict the essences of you and your parents.
They may start out looking different or the same. Whatever they are, be open to them changing as you explore.
They may turn into something completely different
or . . .
. . . disappear entirely.
