Authority

Powerful man, you can tell me your ways,
But I’m not gonna repave the road that I’ve laid.
Powerful man, you can tell me your ways,
But I’m not gonna repave the road that I’ve laid.

You’ve got wisdom for miles,
But I’m here for my own style.
You’ve got wisdom for miles,
But I’m here for my own style.

Been searching for an authority,
A voice to tell me how to be,
But now I know that voice is me.
Been searching for an authority,
A voice to tell me how to be,
But now I know that voice is me.

A woman spun by a man.
How about a woman spun by her own hands?
Fortified by her own dance,
Integrity in her stance,
Presence in her glance.

In my own story, I’ve rarely been an authority,
Always waitin’ for someone else’s permission,
Handing over the reins to my own life’s mission
To those I perceived to be in a powerful position.

But I’ve grown uncomfortable in this habitual submission,
Trying not to be another one of those little bitches,
Searching for a guru,
Abandoning what I knew.
Gotta reach allll the way through,
Till my hand comes back around and taps me on the shoulder.
I say to myself:
“Jill, you know, you’ve gotten wiser as you’ve gotten older.”
Yeah-- I’ve got thick skin,
I’ve got thick skin,
Because I exercise my truth from the deepest within.
I’ve got thick skin,
I’ve got thick skin,
Because I exercise my truth from the deepest within.

The way I live my truth is unique to me,
It may be different than the actions of others I see around me.
But that doesn’t mean I’m wrong,
Celebrating my uniqueness is what makes me strong.
I’m an individual.
Celebrating my uniqueness is what makes me strong.
I’m an individual.
Celebrating my uniqueness is what makes me strong.

My truth is unique to me,
I listen carefully when my emotions speak.
If I don’t get the message, they communicate more clearly.
I know my feelings carry wisdom,
So I trust them in my guiding.

The winds of self-trust beneath my wings,
I feel myself rising, gliding, I’m finally flying.
Sweet sighing.
Relieved at my home-coming.
Proud to be somebody I love.
Proud to be somebody I love.
Proud to be somebody I love,
‘Coz:--

I’m my own authority,
The baddest bitch that I can be.
I’m my own authority,
The baddest bitch that I can be.

I’m my own authority,
The baddest bitch that I can be.
I’m my own authority,
The baddest bitch that I can be.

You’ve got wisdom for miles,
But I’m here for my own style.
You’ve got wisdom for miles,
But I’m here for my own style.

I’m my own authority,
The baddest bitch that I can be.
I’m my own authority,
The baddest bitch that I can be.

I’m my own authority,
The baddest bitch that I can be.
